From Quote to Completion, You’re in the Loop
When you trust your hardscape project to Stokes Scapes, you can be confident that your job remains important to us from Day One until you’re comfortably enjoying your new outdoor space. From our first conversation, you’ll be kept firmly in the loop on every project detail.
Once you’ve contacted us, our first step is to discuss your project’s scope and budget and schedule a time for us to visit the site.
Following our visit, we will send you a detailed and accurate quote and drawings or renderings of your project, along with a contract confirming your job’s details and outlining exactly how we’ll proceed.
Your signed contract and initial payment secure your project’s place on our calendar.
Construction usually takes 1 ½ – 3 weeks, with more complex jobs taking longer. We will perform all the needed excavation and grading, lay a durable and resilient open-grade base, and structure your hardscape with your chosen finishing materials.
Once finished, we’ll do a final walkthrough to ensure you’re 100% satisfied!

The Stokes Difference
Open-Graded Base Construction for Durability
Most hardscape installers use a traditional base of sand and gravel as the bottom layer of their patio construction. While this may make for fast construction, it presents plenty of problems down the road:
- The sand/gravel mix retains water, which causes paving to buckle as the water goes through its normal freeze/thaw cycle in the winter.
- Insects use the sand/gravel mix as a bedding location, providing a convenient nesting place for mosquitoes, roaches, and other pests.
- Sand will always wash out of the paving bed eventually, leading to a warped, sinking hardscape.
Stokes uses “open-graded base” construction for our outdoor projects. With an open-graded base, the paving is set on a foundation of varying sizes of compacted stone, which allows for:
- Better drainage, preventing buckling and “heaving” of the stone
- No nesting place for bugs or insects
- No washout, resulting in a paved surface that retains its shape for years to come
Open-graded base operates on the same principles that railroads use to build railway track beds – structures that have, in many cases, lasted for more than a century while supporting loads reaching the thousands of tons.
